Forum: TV GEN's SoapsLive Date: July 14, 1998 TVGEN: Welcome Catherine. Reiner: Here she is boys! Here she is world! Here's Catherine Hickland. I'm going to turn it over to her. Have a great time. Catherine Hickland: Thank you!! I am so excited to be in cyberspace. It has been a long time. OllieOxenFree: Any chance OLTL and AMC will do a crossover? I bet the answer is no, but I think it would be awesome if you and your hubby could work together. Hickland: I think it would be awesome as well and we would love to do it. If it is something you would love to see, keep those cards and letters coming. Letters have to be dealt with and people ask me this every day. I would love to be able to say yes. Marty2634: Catherine, compare acting on Broadway to working on a soap opera. Hickland: Well, if I forget my lines on a soap, I go back and do it again. No big deal. If I forget something on Broadway, which I have, I just make it up as I go along. I can just die, but no one notices. It is also immediate gratification for the performer. Whereas on TV, I tape a show and forget about it and a month later someone will see it and say, hey I liked the show... or not! Spin186: What kind of storyline would you really like to see your character get involved in? Hickland: I haven't been there long enough to think of anything like that. I have a lot of faith in the writers and like the direction I'm going in. I like to be in something that is emotionally based and something that the people will feel in their hearts, good or bad. Marty2634: Is the cast of One Life To Live a close unit on and off the set? Hickland: They seem to be. I am very new and I'm still kind of an outsider, but it is pretty natural for people to not be a big happy family when you have a cast of over 30 people. I think people care and love each other there. Spiritlouise98: I love Lindsay; she's such a hoot. Are the Buchanans going to accept her? Hickland: I'm learning a script for tomorrow right now and I'm trying my best to get them to accept me, but I don't know. Depends on how good she is, doesn't it? Herby85: Does Lindsay really like Clint, or is she just going after him to make Sam jealous? Hickland: That's a good question. As an actress, I can only play what I have today. And today it looks as though I really care. They don't let us get our scripts too far in advance, just a few days, so I'm never really sure, but that's good, because I don't think the character is ever really sure either. I think that she is still in love with her ex, Sam, but he has made it clear that it is not going to go anywhere. So I think she is really trying. Marty2634: Catherine, How did you meet your husband, Michael Knight? Hickland: I won him as a door prize at my birthday party. Someone brought him as a guest — Mariah Carey's brother, Morgan — and introduced us. He was visiting from NY and I was living in CA. He walked in the house and, well, here we are. He was a dead duck. ShyBostonLady: We all know you are married to one of the funniest characters on TV, Michael Knight aka Tad Martin... is he as funny to live with as what we see on AMC? Hickland: Absolutely!! Michael Knight makes me laugh so hard, which is why I have a good marriage. He gives me Depends moments all the time. Marty2634: Do you get jealous when your husband kisses another woman on AMC? Hickland: No! Never. It's part of the job and comes with dinner. But if I thought he was actually enjoying it, it would be another matter. No offense, Cady, Brooke, Camille... SonyaBladeMK4: So how good are Tad's kisses? Hickland: They are sooo good, that I really wish I could let everyone experience it, but I'm not. Most excellent. ShyBostonLady: How long have you acting in soaps? Hickland: 18 years. In 1980 I joined the cast of AW, then I spun off to TEXAS, then Capitol, with a short pit stop at GH as Ms. Cooper, Blackie's teacher, then Loving, then The City, and now OLTL. I just look good for my age. Hehehehe. ShyBostonLady: I am very happy you landed another soap role in NY. I was a big fan of Loving and The City and enjoyed scenes when Tess Wilder got to sing. Hickland: Thank you and I hope you continue to watch OLTL and I enjoy it when people say nice things and I really enjoy your kind words. Marty2634: Catherine, What attracted you to the role of Lindsay Rappaport on OLTL? Hickland: The chance to work with Kale Browne. A chance to work with Jill F Phelps and Pam Long and most of all the chance to work wtih the excellent cast of OLTL. I've watched the show for nearly 20 years, so it would be like one of you getting the job. It is very thrilling. Soapy_Waters: How would you compare your experience as Tess to your current role? Hickland: This role is much more defined in terms of writing. Tess was a character I had to fight for constantly. They were always trying to make her different than what I created because of writer changes etc. That character didn't have anything and I was always scratching to be part of something. This character Lindsay is an accomplished artist and socialite and small-time schemer. She is a person with an agenda and will be very interesting. Mike_Todic: What does Susan Lucci have to do to win the Best Actress Daytime Emmy Award and when's it going to be your turn? Hickland: I'm sure Susan would very much like to win the Emmy. Best Actress is always a terribly competitive category. But the truth is she doesn't need the Emmy, she's really the most amazing person and gracious human being and to me that counts far more than a little statue. I can't even imagine being nominated, but it would be great. Star_trek_boy: Why do you act? What reason? I have acted, only in plays for small theatres, but it was fun. What gives you the energy to act? Hickland: When I started out, if I didn't act, I thought I would die. And after doing it for so many years, I don't feel like that any more because I have a life and other things I like to do. I like to sing, record, I have a husband. Other things have become important to me as well. Now I just do it because I love it. Marty2634: Catherine, which actors or actresses do you admire the most on Daytime TV? Hickland: Michael Knight, not because he's my husband — I swear! Justin Deas, David Canary, Hilary B. Smith, and Robert Woods, and I also think Roger Howarth is pretty damn amazing. Eric Braden and Melody Thomas Scott are also outstanding. JMCII2: Is your husband worried about AMC's falling ratings? Glad to see you back on the air! Hickland: Thank you. Glad to be back. Yes, everyone is worried about falling ratings. But, you know, I hope the audience will have a little more patience because I know they're working hard to bring you a good show. Yharr: Hi Catherine, are you here? I just would like to know how tall you are? And if you like shorter men? 'Cause I'm a 4-foot-10-inch ball of fire! Hickland: I'm 5 feet 5 inches and I DO like short men!! But you'd never know it from the ones I've married! And a ball of fire is always a good thing. DranamTK: I have always thought of you as having a great personality. What makes you laugh and are you ticklish anywhere? Hickland: Thank you very much. Anything that's not sad makes me laugh. And I don't particularly like to be tickled in the ribs. Squall_Leonheart8: How is Roger Howarth in real life? Is he nerdy and stupid? Hickland: He's very quiet and very serious. And although I don't know him at all, I'm told he is very sweet. Marty2634: What motivates you to give the best performance every time you shoot a new scene on OLTL? Hickland: Funny question, I was talking about that today with Kale Browne. The truth is the only thing that motivates me is the audience. Knowing that I have to make the audience believe that I live this life and take them on this adventure, I do it for the audience. Yharr: Have you considered the vacant Spice Girls position? Hickland: Yes I have!!!! I just don't have the time right now. That's funny. I'd be Naughty Spice. Or Frisky Spice! Debbie430: Will you be attending Super Soap III? Hickland: Yes I will!! Doc_Martin_2112: Do you think soaps are taking a wrong turn by getting involved with ghosts and aliens? Hickland: I don't mind the ghosts. Because I believe in spirits, you know. And the movie, Ghost, rocked my world. But the aliens, now come on. If the aliens looked like Brad Pitt, then I would say, bring them on! Or Leonardo di Caprio. Soapy_Waters: Was OLTL your first choice when you decided to do another soap? Hickland: I absolutely wanted OLTL or AMC. They were equal in what I wanted. One or the other would have made me very very happy. ServoMT: Do you keep in touch with any of your City, Loving, or Capitol castmates? Hickland: Micahel Caitlin from Capitol. We keep in touch via the computer. Constance Towers from Capitol, Marge Desay from Capitol. And that's about it. A_quiet_woman: I haven't been able to watch consistently, but I too, am curious as your character seems much closer in age to the "new" Kevin, than Clint or Bo; it would be interesting to get the kids involved, wouldn't it? Hickland: Amen, sister! What a FABULOUS idea!!! ShyBostonLady: Do you prefer the West Coast over the East Coast? Hickland: I really love both, but I love what NY has to offer more. I'd be just as happy anywhere I'd live, though. Lol_12205: What's the most embarrassing moment that happened on the show? Hickland: I'm hard to embarrass, so I don't think I've had anything embarrassing happen. Spin186: If you had your choice of any leading man from any soap, who would you most likely like to play opposite of and why? What kind of a storyline would you like to do with your "fantasy" leading man? Hickland: I would be happy to act with any of the before-mentioned actors. And the storyline would have to be emotionally driven, really getting to the heart of the audience. Gil6605: Catherine, do you have a fan club? Hickland: No I don't, but I have a website. The address is: www.hickland.com and I very much enjoy hearing from people from my site. There are a lot of pics to download and you can get my CD on the site. I am just now getting to my mail from the office, so please be patient with me. And I just want to say Hi to my cyberfamily, the Hughleys. TVGEN: Thanks for joining us tonight, Catherine. Please come back again. Hickland: Thank you so much. I really enjoyed chatting with everyone. Keep watching! |
